The Thanksgiving holiday has almost been completely taken over by commercialization. There’s Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. Many stores are even open on Thanksgiving Day! It’s all about getting the best deals on things for yourself and your loved ones.
But what about those who don’t have anyone?
That’s where Giving Tuesday comes in.
Giving Tuesday, which is celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, was created five years ago by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City. It is a day meant to “connect diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.”
Last year, Giving Tuesday was celebrated by 71 countries and raised $116.7 million globally to benefit those in need.
There are plenty of ways that you can get involved in your community to celebrate Giving Tuesday.
- Volunteer at your local homeless shelter
- Donate warm winter clothing and coats
- Visit your local nursing home and give out senior care packs
- Hold a food drive in your neighborhood or at your church, and take the food collected to your local food pantry
- Buy Christmas presents for someone less fortunate than you
- Fix and serve meals through Meals on Wheels or a similar organization
Give Back with Grow In Wisdom
Here at the Grow In Wisdom Foundation, giving back to our community is part of our mission – we created the foundation for the “purpose of putting faith to work by educating, coordinating, and providing action to community service through the Word of God.”
This Giving Tuesday, you can help us make an impact in our community by donating or purchasing our album – Grow In Wisdom Foundation presents Word to the Wise.
This album was a labor of love by Grow In Wisdom Foundation founder Scotty G. As we talked about in our previous blog, Behind the Music: An Interview with Scotty G, the album has three purposes that all go back to the mission of our foundation.
First, the album is a way to spread the Word of God and to introduce Christian values to everyone who listens to it. We, as Christians, must always seek to spread the Word of God, as written in the Bible, to everyone around us.
Second, sales from the album will go towards our goal of building a homeless resource center here in Charlotte.
Finally, we want to use the album to increase awareness of the issues of homelessness, including drug addiction, domestic violence, disability, and more. In today’s digital age, “entertainment is the gateway to attention,” and attention to our cause is what will ultimately help us do more to help those in our community.
So, if you’re not sure what to do to give back to your community this Giving Tuesday, consider buying Grow In Wisdom presents Word to the Wise. Not only do you get an inspirational, contemporary Christian hip-hop album, but the money you spend will go to a great cause.
There’s nothing better than that.
